oh, say can you see?

our first day in baltimore, which we were staying just outside of with richard's aunt mary, was great.  it was pretty laid back, and it felt like kind of a break.  a vacation from the vacation we were on, if you will.  mary made us a delicious waffle breakfast, and then she told us about some of the sights we might enjoy.  the one at the top of her list was the one we visited:  fort mchenry, where the star spangled banner was written.  this is the size of the actual flag that was flying in 1814.

the flag that flies at the fort now is only barely the size of the blue on that big flag.

we had fun being outside and just lollygagging around the grounds, hearing all of the history.

we left to continue our "free day" down by the harbor, but first we had to find a parking spot (which is a nightmare in all of these big cities we visited) and change a diaper.  eventually we did both.

we had a great time just wandering around, and exploring the sliver of baltimore that we had time to see.

and when it started to rain cats and dogs, we ducked into a sandwich shop and played until it dried up enough for us to head back out.

where we were showered with passionate kisses from our boy. all the way back to the car.

and as soon as we wiped all the slobber off, we went back to aunt mary's to enjoy a lovely dinner with her, mark, and richard's cousin davis and his cute little family.  it was a wonderful day without any real plans or stress.  it was the perfect first excursion for our own little family.  just us.
