kicking back up top

after a couple of days of walking like pioneer children, we decided to take it easy.
richard had always wanted to do a double-decker bus tour, so we did.  but on our
way to the starting point, we saw $1 slices of pizza and decided that sounded like a
pretty nutritious breakfast.  richard owed me one from the day before, so he had
his 3rd and 4th slices for the most important meal of the day.

i was only on my first slice for the trip.

already feeling a little cheese-logged, but he soldiered on and hoovered 'em.

we finally made it to the bus.  the tour started in times square, and we bought
the all-inclusive pass because our feet were still throbbing from the first half
of our vacay.

it was a hop-on, hop-off type of deal, so you could stop at any of the
sights that you really wanted to see and then get on another bus to finish
up your tour later.  "we'll hop off at the places we really want to see," we
told ourselves...

but we found that not hopping at all felt much better on our feet, and you
could actually see the sights quite well right from where we were sitting.

we're really mature, and not only did we enjoy the sights, but some of the signs
that may have needed a little help with translation.

although i've always wanted to go to the united nations, this is as close as
we made it.  it'll still be there next time.

somewhere downtown richard almost lost his beloved fedora as we
drove through a mighty gust, but his cat-like reflexes allowed him to save
it.  i'm not sure he'd have had the energy if we'd been hopping off and on
all day.

many a street sign and tree branch came close to beheading us.

eventually the tour ended, and we did hop off in times square.  there is never
a lack of characters to entertain in this part of the city.  i can't really remember
what these guys were preaching, but their outfits were great.  like thug versions
robin hood's merry men.

we really did make note of a couple places we wanted to see but
didn't hop-off for, and garrett's popcorn was at the top of the list.  i
brought home a bunch of this from chicago because of richard's
love for the snack, and it tasted just as good in nyc.

we saw the real soup nazi!

and then we started another tour of the city atop the bus.  this time we went
uptown.  the popcorn came in super handy.

i thought there was more interesting architecture uptown...like this carriage
roundabout that was kept as the front of this apartment building.

and this hospital that had minimal corners, because when it was built they thought
that bacteria hid in corners.  kinda makes sense, but even flat and round walls get
dirty enough if you let them.  doctors.

we went way up town and did a u-turn in our old harlem stomping grounds.

where we saw this traitor's dirty mug.

and a dance-off, of course.  there were two kids battling to a remix of the
jackson 5, and all the older kids were cheering them on.  it was hilarious
and amazing.

after our uptown tour, we decided to walk around a bit.

just kidding!

we got on the night tour, post haste.  walking?  bleh!

while we were stuck in a traffic jam, richard was really hoping i wouldn't turn
my head to see this glowing sign...he owed me 4 slices for the day.

the night tour was great because we went across the manhattan bridge and got
to see an awesome view of the manhattan skyline.  our camera is amazing, so our
pictures capture exactly what we saw.  not really.

the combination of our awesome camera and the fact that we were riding high
with the top down made for perfect photo shoot conditions.

we finally got a good one, but even in the not-so-good ones we were having
a marvelous time.

especially after it started raining cats and dogs.

we were drenched.  but that didn't change the fact that richard owed me
4 slices of pizza.  so we made our way, soaking wet, back to brooklyn
to partake of some great pizza at grimaldi's, where they have the worst
customer service.  i won't say the worst in the world, because we experienced
that the following night.

his belly was full, but our feet hurt a little less that night.
